The name 'Turpan' conjures images of men in turbans and long pakistani robes. And indeed so. How can this be China?
There are also lots of vineyards, some right at one's door-step. Unfortunately May is not the harvesting time for grapes, not even sour grapes :-).
This is a really unique city. I really like it.
